What is IP Rating

IP rating, or Ingress Protection rating, is a standard used to define the level of sealing effectiveness of electrical enclosures against intrusion from foreign bodies (like dust and dirt) and moisture. The IP rating is typically represented by the letters “IP” followed by two digits.

The first digit indicates the degree of protection against solid objects, ranging from 0 (no protection) to 6 (completely dust-tight). The second digit indicates the degree of protection against water, ranging from 0 (no protection) to 9 (protection against high-pressure, high-temperature jets of water).

For example, an IP68 rating means the device is completely dust-tight (6) and can withstand immersion in water beyond 1 meter for a prolonged period (8). These ratings are crucial in determining the suitability of equipment for various environments, such as outdoor use or industrial settings.

Selecting IP Ratings for Lighting Fixtures

IP20 Lights Application

Lighting fixtures with an IP20 rating are suitable for indoor residential use where exposure to moisture is minimal. They are commonly installed in living rooms, bedrooms, and other dry areas where protection against solid objects is sufficient.

IP44 Lights Application

Lighting fixtures with an IP44 rating are ideal for areas with higher moisture levels, such as bathrooms, kitchens, and covered outdoor spaces. Equipped with waterproof drivers and connectors, these fixtures provide reliable performance and durability in wet environments, ensuring safety and longevity.

IP67 Lights Application

Lighting fixtures with an IP67 rating are designed for outdoor use in areas exposed to harsh weather conditions. These fixtures offer complete protection against dust and can withstand temporary immersion in water, making them suitable for outdoor landscapes, gardens, and pathways where durability and weather resistance are essential.
